Safe Harbor Port Milford

Designated by the state of Connecticut as a Natural Area Preserve and an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society, Charles Island provides crucial habitat for many of the state’s waterbirds and is one of the largest remaining breeding colonies for the heron and egret. Visitors are encouraged to bring their binoculars to catch a glimpse of these rare and beautiful birds, including the snowy egret, long-eared owl, and more. Charles Island is open for passive recreation only from September through April and can be accessed by walking across a tie bar that is exposed during low tide. Fishing is also permitted along the sandbar.
